In 2025, the United Opticians Association partnered with The Vision Council to commission a national survey exploring consumer attitudes toward optician licensing and professional qualifications. Respondents represented a broad cross-section of the general population, spanning both licensed and unlicensed states, and reflected diverse demographics including age, gender, race, ethnicity, household income, and education level. The findings, highlighted in the data points below, reveal a powerful, untapped opportunity to elevate the opticianry profession through national adoption of minimal education and certification. We invite you to get involved with us as we work towards requiring certification or licensure in every state, driving trust, excellence, and recognition for opticians nationwide.
